The courses selected above represent a perfectly-tailored path through the remainder of High School and into UBC Arts, while simultaneously allowing me to pursue my interests to the fullest. There are three criteria that need to be met in order to gain entry into the UBC Arts program for The IB Diploma Programme: The attainment of The English Language Admission Standard, the completion of the Diploma Programme with a score of at least 24/45 points with the student taking three or more Higher Level, Extended Essay, and Theory of Knowledge Courses, and the passing of IB English with a minimum of 3 points. IB Students are also streamlined into a separate stream of applications, giving me a decisive advantage over those in non-IB programs, and may even receive first year credit for courses where and if I achieve higher than an IB level 5 or 6 in, depending on the course. In addition to the academic advantages of IB, The CAS element of The IB Core (Community, Action, Service) ensures that I will continue to be actively engaged in the community and on-my-toes in the real world, something Universities look for to ensure the person they are accepting has other smarts than just school.
The E-portfolio Tour!
Since I forgot to critique it in depth in my formal tour, Planning 10 is a great course because it really is all about you, and your plans for your immediate future. So immediate and so relevant is this course that I have already directly made use of about half the projects. (Typefocus Reflection results in job and IB interviews, Resume and Cover Letter practically verbatim when applying for a job, the graduation planner when inputting my course selections for Grades 11 and 12, and using the trip planner as a model for a summer camping trip with me and my three chums from the first photo!) Therefore, it should be noted that my only complaints with the course were truly complaints I had by myself: if I wasn't motivated to do anything, then nothing would happen. One brief piece of advise I would give to those currently re-designing the curriculum and perhaps Planning 10 would be to replace Unit 4 with a Unit solely dedicated to driving. While the other health topics in that Unit such as STIs are indeed important, from grade 8 onwards we are subjected to an annual regime of in-class very visual presentations on the topic. Driving however, is something new and relevant for all the grade 10s I have had conversations with, and finding a way to include the mock driving quiz, studying the ICBC study guide, and maybe even working in budgeting for the maintenance of a car would prove both relevant, popular, and very gratifying indeed on one's 16th birthday. Other than that, all I can say is that the course was a worthwhile lesson in planning.
